Promote On Becoming A Contributor To Society 

Improve On Disabled Obstacles

(3-12-2018, Penang) President for Society of the Disabled Persons Penang, Dato¡¯ Teh Lay Kuan said that our country needs to reduce and to improve on the obstacles for the disabled, so as to promote the disabled to become active contributors to the society.

¡¡

She said, in Malaysia, the involvement of the disabled into various activities of the society still have a lot of room to improve. It needs the efforts and helps by all including the government, the authorities concerned, various organizations, the general public to enable the disabled people to be active contributors to the society.

 

¡°This is due to there are still some major barriers to be addressed or improved such as more disabled friendly facilities, more suitable mode of transportation, more job opportunities and better understanding on the capabilities of the disabled.¡±

She mentioned, the disabled themselves should also increase the participation rate in creating a better living environment rather than relying on the helps or efforts of others.

She pointed out during the launching ceremony of 19th Blood Donation Campaign jointly organized by the Society of the Disabled Persons Penang, Youth Group of Un Khuay Hoay Kuan, Youth Group of Buddhist Light International Association (BLIA) Penang Branch and Caring Rehabilitation Society of PWD Penang.

Dato¡¯ Teh Lay Kuan said the the blood donation campaign was organized in conjunction with The International Day of Persons with Disabilities which falls on the 3rd of December. The theme for 2018 International Day of People with Disability is ¡°Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality¡±.

¡°The basic infrastructures and services need to be more accessible, user-friendly and inclusive of all people¡¯s needs where the needs of people with disabilities form part of the needs.¡±

YB Lee Chun Kit: Let Buildings & Facilities Fulfilling The Standard of Disabled Friendly  

¡¡

YB Chris Lee Chun Kit, the state assemblyman for Pulau Tikus pointed that the Penang Accessibility Action Group (PAAG) being led by him will apply for the approval of the state government, based on the assessment list, to enable building and facilities built in the future to meet the disabled friendly standard.

He said , even through there are a lot of disabled friendly facilities, however due to no proper consultation, those set ups are not able to be utilized properly.

YB Jason Ong Khan Lee: Implementation on 10% Disabled Persons Quota System

YB Jason Ong Khan Lee, State Assemblyman for Kebun Bunga Lee pointed that in order to safeguard the welfare and living requirement of the disabled, he hoped that the private sector and the governmental sector could implement the 10% quota system in hiring the disabled persons.

He suggested that tax discount should be given to those participating enterprises, thus encouraging more participating parties and more job opportunities could be generated for the group of disabled.

YB Wong Hon Wai: Free Funicular Train Ride For OKU Card Holder

YB Wong Hon Wai, MP for Bukit Bendera mentioned about the benefit by the Penang Hill Corporation where OKU Card Holder issued by the Social Welfare Department is entitled to the free ride of Penang Hill Funicular Train.

Oh Tong Keong: To Uplift the Health Welfare of the People

Oh Tong Keong, Penang Gerakan Chairman pointed out that the government should uplift the health welfare of the people. More events and sports activities should be organized to increase the health level and the health awareness.

Those who were present including Youth Chief for Youth Group of Buddhist Light International Association (BLIA) Penang Branch Tan Kar Min, Deputy Youth Chief for Youth Group of Un Khuay Hoay Kuan Lim Gin Keat and President for Caring Rehabilitation Society of PWD Penang Wong Tin Choi .
