(22-06-2014) Teh Lay Kuan, President for the Society of the Disabled Persons (SDPP) said that although there are many charity centers and charity homes in Malaysia providing food and lodging for the disabled, generally they only accept disabled persons who are independent, can take care of themselves and

can do some simple chores. Those severely disabled persons are normally not accepted. She hoped the government could look into this issue.

She said that taking care of the disabled is a heavy burden, she understood the difficulties being faced by these centers.

Even though some private centers do provide these type of services, not all severely disabled persons can afford that type of service charges and fees.

“SDPP would like to propose to the authority concerned or the government to provide fully funded caring for these group of severely disabled persons, also to set up a group of well trained caregivers making daily routine check to these group of severely disabled persons. We will also work together with the authorities concerned for the better livelihood of the disabled.”

She pointed out the above during the annual Durian and Tropical Fruits party on Sunday organized by SDPP.

State assemblyman for Komtar YB Teh Lai Heng mentioned that the state government has been taking care of the weaker groups including the upgrading of disabled friendly facilities to make their movement easier.

He undertook that he would bring up the proposal of SDPP to the attention of the Chairman for Welfare, Caring Society and Environment committee of Penang state, YB Phee Boon Poh, so that the state government and the federal government could discuss on how to assist the disabled group on this issue.
