(4/7/2010)The Society of Disabled Person Penang (SDPP) held its 2010 Durian & Tropical Fruits Party at Goh Kongsi (Ean Leng Tong), Penang. On behalf of SDPP, Madam Teh Lay Kuan, president of SDPP, thanked Goh Kongsi for their every help  towards the organizing of the event.

Madam Teh hoped that all could have a good eating party on durian and other tropical fruits prepared on that day.

On current issues, Madam Teh said SDPP would like to point out that lately Esplanade has lost its disabled-friendly status. This can be seen especially after the reconstruction and beatification of Esplanade, most of the ramps have been demolished making Esplanade an area that is not disabled friendly. She therefore would like to appeal to the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures to make the Esplanade disabled friendly again.

Madam Teh said that SDPP highlighted recently, where it was understood through newspaper, there are about 46 places in Penang that would be made disabled friendly. She stressed that SDPP would be very glad to work together with the related government agencies and non-government organizations by contributing any useful input and recommendation that could make those places disabled friendly.

Recently, she said SDPP also made an appeal to all banks and commercial institutions to incorporate hand-rail on the staircase and to build a small ramp leading to their buildings for the wheelchair bound so as to be disabled and also senior citizen friendly as far as possible. She mentioned SDPP is very glad to notice that at least two banks took the initiative to do that. She hoped that more banks and commercial institutions would follow the good examples set.

On behalf of SDPP, Madam Teh stressed that SDPP would continue to voice out the plight of the under-privileged and the disabled in Malaysia, especially in Penang.  SDPP would continue to work together with all government agencies and non-government organizations for the better livelihood and benefits of the under-privileged and the disabled.
